| Travelers sporadically populate the riversides of this mountainous golden landscape screen dominated by one huge snow covered peak. Boats ply the dark blue waters, while horses frolic in the forest lower left. Is it the travelers from the tales of Ise we see walking through a copse of pine in the center? Late 17th or 18th century, the gold is spectacular. The scene is bordered with regal purple brocade separated from the scene by a strip of white silk, with a black lacquered wooden frame. Smaller than usual at 39-1/2 by 107 inches (1 meter x 272 cm), it is perfect for wall hanging over a sofa or bed. The screen has been fully restored at some time in the distant past. There are abrasions and some loss of the heavy pigment, testament to its age these seem to enhance the sense of antiquity. | |||||||||||||
