Superb Japanese Edo p. Kano Gold Winter Screen
A spectacular sense of movement defines this superb 19th century (late Edo) gold screen painted in traditional Kano style with birds in winter foliage. Snow dusted willow branches dangle vertically over a thick ribbon of blue billowing through the lower scene. The screen has a great sense of balance, truly a superlative rendition of this subject. The screen is 67-1/2 by 147-1/2 inches (172 x 374 cm) and is in excellent condition, completely restored with no over-painting. It features an antique cloth border suiting the period and a close match to the original, and is bordered in black lacquered wood. The backing paper is dark blue with phoenix and floral crests in black, making the back equally as impressive as the front.
