Antique Japanese Kacho Bird and Flower Screen, Seika
A menagerie of birds frolic among the colorful foliage on this six panel screen by Kyoto artist Seika (Sugimoto Jinzaburo, b. 1877). A variety of seasonal flora burst with fresh life across the expanse. The screen is performed with pigment on paper, featuring an auburn silk border with black lacquered frame and etched brass hardware, and even retaining the original blue backing paper. The artist seems to imbue the screen with his own inner vision and a great sense of Asobi gokoro (a playful heart). Vigorous and refreshing, the birds dance through the air. The screen is 67 by 149 inches fully extended (170.5 x 378 cm) and is in overall fine condition, with only minor handling marks. Jinzaburo learned the art of painting under the tutelage of one of the Kyotos schools most famous, Takeuchi Seiho. Minor marks and abrasions typical of age
