Antique Japanese Ryukyu Suzuri Bako Lacquer Writing Box
A sage stands frozen in time, gaze locked on a golden pavilion shrouded by trees in the elaborate landscape decorating the surface of this Ryukyu Suzuri bako writing box. The box is covered in vermilion lacquer with gold makie overtop, and inlays of mother of pearl forming the sage, bridge posts, and roof gables. Inside Chidori plovers soar over an ocean of breaking waves. The box is 8 x 9-1/4 x 1-1/2 inches (20.5 x 24 x 4 cm). Ryukyu refers to the Island chain of Okinawa, where this box was likely produced for export to Japans main islands. The box has been repaired along the right edge of the lid where it was cracked and likely once broken (see close-up photos).
