Huge Antique Japanese Lacquer Vase, Maki-e Butterflies
Large butterflies float effortlessly across the surface this substantial ikebana bamboo vase notched with multiple openings for depositing flowers and vines. Seven large butterflies are delicately written in gold, silver and black taka-maki-e with an inscription on back in gold signed Kakudohei. Outside polished bamboo contrasts with the soft black aged-lacquer interior. Three copper inserts protect the vase from water. There are some losses to the gold on the inscription, 1 butterfly, and some minor chips in the edges of the black lacquer. It is roughly 3 feet (94 cm) tall, 7 inches (17 cm) diameter. A fantastic and unusual example! (Due to size this piece must be sent by private air freight, and the cost of shipping will be calculated by the buyers address)
