Unusual 19th C. Japanese Bronze Smoking Daruma Koro
A unique Edo period bronze koro, here we find the Daruma, legendary founder of Zen Buddhism, reclining with a pipe, his robes draping lazily about. In his knee is cut the character Kotobuki (fortune), his hand the handle for this removable lid of the incense chamber. The smoke drifts up through the character, as if coming from the pipe resting on his knee. It seems to have once been covered in lacquer in the style imported by Obaku monks in the 17th century. Dating from mid to late Edo (18th to 19th century), he wears an extra robe of incense soot bearing testament to the centuries of use. It is 8-1/2 inches (21.5 cm) long, 5 inches (12.5 cm) tall and unsigned, as would be typical of the era.
