Spectacular Japanese Iga Vase by Umehara Isamu
A fine traditional Iga Mimitsuki Vase by Umehara Isamu (b. 1946) covered in running rivulets of green ash glaze and thick smatterings of goma, enclosed in the original signed Shiho Kiri-wood box. The artist has taken the traditional form, with wide base and narrow lip, and attached two squared lug handles up high, balancing the heavy weight of the base. A long drag with the finger down the sides to disturb the shape, and a number of large X marks cut into the side add that sense of Mingei so inherent to Iga ware. It is 9 inches (22.5 cm) tall and in perfect condition. Umehara was born in Osaka, and began his artistic career as a graphic designer, coming later to the world of ceramics. Well traveled, he has been to over 30 countries, and the experiences gathered there have helped him to see the beauty imbued in his own traditional culture. He specializes in the tea ware of Mino, concentrating on Iga, Shino and Seto-guro, from his Anagama kiln in Gifu. Avoiding the political world of large exhibitions, he favors exhibiting in small personal spaces.
