| A small 19th century signed four piece bow with 6 signed arrows held in a lovely silver bound mulberry box; a parlor game from the pleasure quarters of old Japan. The fine wooden arrows are uniquely decorated with an individual pattern of gold bands on each, white feather fletch and ivory knock and tip, the tip capped with iron. Each arrow is 11 inches (28.5 cm) long and in fine condition. The bow is carved wood, each piece capped with silver or a silver alloy over bone. Assembled it is 35 inches (89 cm) long. The top piece has been repaired once. Each arrow fits in its place in a rack inside the box, with a second inner box likely made to hold the string (not present). The box and lid corners are bound with tiny silver fans, six out of eight of which are still present. This was an indoor shooting game seen occasionally in the stories of the pleasure quarters of old Japan. Small targets would be selected and the victor would receive a favor or the loser would sit out a round of drinking, any number of combinations could be afforded. It is an exceptional example. The box has bowed in on the long sides some with age. | ||||||||||
