SUPERB TAISHO Japanese Silk Scroll by HIRAI BAISEN
A lone scholar in brilliant yellow robes stands in remote contemplation, the swift running waters of a mountain stream a soft melody to accompany his thoughts. The silk painting is by innovative artist Hirai Baisen (1889-1969) enclosed in the original signed and stamped wooden box in turn enclosed in a protective red lacquered wooden box (Niju-bako). An exemplary work by this representative artist dating from the early 20th century it retains the clarity of thought typical of Meiji painting, however likely dates circa 1920. The scene is bordered in blue silk patterned with flowering vines; extended in beige and features solid ivory rollers. The scroll measures 16 by 80 inches (40.5 x 203 cm) and is in fine condition but for some faint scattered foxing. Baisen graduated the Kyoto Municipal School of Fine Arts and was a regular exhibitor with the Bunten from 1907-1931. Having worked in any number of styles, he was a true Jiyu-gakka who excelled in the early years of his career. However he did slowly withdraw from the competitive world of Japanese art beginning in the war years. His works are held by the National Museum of Modern Art in Tokyo, and the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston.
