SUPERB Japanese BIZEN TSUBO VASE, KOYAMA SUEHIRO
Bizen does not get much better than this! Here is a phenomenal Tsubo by Koyama Suehiro (b. 1948) enclosed in the original signed wooden box. Burnt crisp and black on the front, the face changes as we turn the tsubo away from the flame, revealing rivulets of ash glaze running toward the back through a surface heavily textured with particles. Turning more we find these rivulets condensing into streaks rushing around a bare eye lidded with a large kutsuki. Below are pieces of two necks now attached to the tsubo, which likely stuck when the piece changed position in the kiln due to heat or wind patterns, or the possible collapse of a shelf. It is an entirely unique piece. The Japanese have always understood the value of impurities, the accidental adding value and a sense of the extraordinary to an ordinarily mundane item. The tsubo is 10-3/4 inches (27.5 cm) tall, 11-1/2 inches (29 cm) wide. Suehiro studied for five years under Kaneshige Sozan before establishing his own kiln in 1971. This piece dates from those early years. In 1982 he established an Anagama at his current location in Bizen. He has won first place at the Okayama Prefectural Exhibition, as well as the Governors prize and others. His works have also been accepted at the National Traditional Arts and Crafts Exhibition, National Ceramics Exhibition, and one of his pieces was selected as a gift for the Imperial family. This is a large and heavy piece, and as shipping is included in the catalog price, please take into consideration it is a significant factor in the cost.
