Edo period Japanese Samurai 2 SCROLL SET
This is a 2 scroll set painted with samurai clutching prayer beads enclosed in an ancient wooden box titled Kishi Zenkei no Zo, Kishi Zenko no Zo (Portraits of Kishi Zenkei and Kishi Zenko). One scroll bears the date Ansei 3 (1856), Summer. It is unclear weather this is the actual date of the paintings, or the date of events pertaining to the lives of the two men featured. Also included is an old letter or attribution, and a more modern (pre-war) letter. On the second is written, These two sacrificed for their country, lower your head when viewing these images and learn from their example. From this and the date contained we must assume these men were involved somehow in the Meiji Restoration. The scrolls are mineral pigment and ink on silk, featuring rough silk borders and rosewood rollers. They measure 21 by 71 inches each (53 x 180 cm) and are overall in good condition.
