| The Japanese have long esteemed crafts from other Asian countries and over the centuries many of these items have made the journey to this land. For a brief change of pace we will be listing a few in our catalog. Here is a truly ancient Chinese Tenmoku Chawan in dark glaze, with rivet like bumps evenly spaced across the outer surface enclosed in an old kiri-wood box. The Hakogaki (inscription inside the lid) reads TenMoku Yu Wan (Glazed Tenmoku bowl) HokuSoMatsu JiDai (Late 13th century)KaNanShoTei Shu (Province name in China) Kama SeiHin Nari (Fired Ceramic ware). It has a wonderful glaze technique, and the foot ring on the bottom has been worn almost completely smooth from handling over the centuries. Looking at the base one can imagine the thousands of times the bowl has been thrice turned on the palm. It has been dropped and broken; a crack visible running through the body, and a large chip repaired in one side (see photos) however is well repaired and does not leak. | |||||||||||
