ANTIQUE Japanese NANGA SUMI-E SCREEN, KEISEN
A fine early 20th century literati landscape by prominent artist Ikeda Keisen (1863-1932) in which a scholar and luggage bearer drawn with delicate precision walk toward a thatch roofed hut perched on the shores of a large lake, the scene hemmed in by clouds of fine gold flake. Massive rock formations and gnarly plum scratched in dark ink pull the eye hither and thither across the painted surface, constantly drawing attention to new aspects and details. The scene is bordered with a thin band of white and gold brocade lapped by a wide band of green linen embellished with flowering gold tendrils and features a black lacquered wooden frame. It measures 149-1/2 by 67-3/4 inches (380 x172 cm). There is a water stain in the upper corner of panels two and three, and a scratch to the right of the inscription; otherwise the painted surface is very presentable. Still very sturdy, there are a few minor punctures and abrasions to the backing paper on the outside two panels. Ikeda Keisen received initial training under his father Ikeda Unsho (1823-1887), who was a professor at the Kyoto Prefectural Special School of Painting, and followed up by apprenticing under a number of other well known artists during which time he managed considerable research into painting and materials before branching off on his own. He was adept at both Nanga and Nihonga styles, and received numerous awards, including at the prestigious Bunten.
