IMPORTANT Japanese ZENGA SCROLL, DEIRYU
An early 20th century sumi-e ink painting by Kutsu Deiryu (Kanshu Sojun, 1895-1954, Daruma heir to Nantenbo), featuring the scene for which he is most famous, a procession of monks coming down out of the hills of Kyoto on begging rounds. The fine scene is bordered in crushed black paper and features bamboo rollers. The scroll measures 17 x 78 inches (43 x 198 cm) and aside from some very minor spotting, is in excellent condition. Deiryu was born into a military family, however due to poor health entered Kaiseiji under the 72-year-old Nakahara Nantenbo at the age of 16. He was an accomplished swordsman and is well known as the teacher of Kasumi Bunsho. This same scene was featured on the cover of the book The Art of 20th Century Zen by Audrey Seo/Stephen Addiss (ISBN 1-57062-533-0).
