OLD Japanese CERAMIC VASE w/box, ITO SUIKO I
Blue striped fish swim across the bubbly blue-gray sides of this early 20th century handled vase by artist Ito Suiko I (1894-1980) which comes enclosed in the original signed kiri-wood box. The sides of the round squat vase have been flattened, and looping flat handles attached at the neck and shoulder. The vase is quite sturdy. Inside the dark red clay circle of the foot is the artists stamp and the original brokerage stamp from before the Second World War. The vase measures 6-1/2 inches (16 cm) tall., 7-1/4 inches (18 5 cm) wide and 5-1/2 inches (14 cm) deep. Suiko was a student of Ito Tozan, and went on to a brilliant career, submitting works to and participating as a judge at the Nitten National Art Exhibition. His works are in the permenant collection of the Kyoto City Museum.
