| A brilliant 19th century 8 panel Kanga screen depicting a vast scene of scholars at leisure. Pageboys enter from the left bearing books and a sword. A seated elder looks on as another puts brush to paper, while a party of four hold lively conversation at an adjacent table. Beyond them a young scholar and page attempt to lift a burly fellow who has exceeded his limit. A very busy group populates panels five and six, studying paintings and books while sharing tea and baskets of fruit. On the last two panels a sleeping gentlemen is lead away on horseback supported from falling over by an attendant while a last group of three making their way home from the revelry gaze at the crowd. All is well depicted in mineral pigments on paper. The scene is hemmed in by clouds of gold flake and bordered in faded blue brocade. There is some worm damage, mostly along the spines, and the paper at the bottom of panels 1,2,3,4 and 8 is somewhat loose. The screen retains the original backing paper that does have a few minor tears and is heavily worn along the bottom edge of the last panel. It measures 43 by 149-1/2 inches (109.5 x 380 cm). | |||||||||||||||
