GREAT OLD Japanese BUNRAKU SAMURAI DOLL
An impressive image of a bunshichi (male warrior puppet) dressed in a stunning costume of gold brocade embellished with dragon and phoenix dials over a kiko field, and featuring movable arms, head and eyes. His head is made of wood covered with flesh-toned gofun (powdered shellfish) and has thick bristly hair tied in a topknot with gold and silver threads. The doll stands over 30 inches (76 cm) tall and comes with a bamboo stand. It likely dates from the period between 1950 and 1970, when Japan experienced ever increasing interest in traditional culture, and the Bunraku theater was revitalized.
