JAPANESE MINGEI CARVING, DAIMYO GYORETSU
A very interesting set of 18 tiny wooden figures set into a wooden base and enclosed in a wooden box with glass front. The miniature scene is of a Daimyou Gyoretsu, or seasonal pilgrimage. The Daimyo or Feudal lord sits astride his horse, preceded by spear bearing Samurai who call upon other travelers to bow down while he passes. Behind march another group of soldiers and baggage carriers. Each unique figure stands just less than 2 inches (5 cm) tall. The inscription on the box reads Showa 16 (1941) 9th month 10th day (day of fathers death) followed by the address of a Ryokan (traditional inn) in Nara prefecture. This is followed by In commemoration of the visit of Onuki Waiko, by resident of Zushi-township Wakasa Kichijiro. However this does not indicate whether this was the date the carvings were made or just the box. It is possible that the carvings are older and were a prized possession of the Father, and on the anniversary of his death, the friend Waiko came to visit and ordered the box made. The box is 23-1/2 by 6-3/4 by 6 inches tall (59.5 x 17.3 x 15 cm). There is a square hole just behind the rock on the scene, indicating there may have once been another figure, or sign or stone lantern in the scene that has since disappeared. The door on back of the box is a replacement to the original, which was likely removed to allow light to pass through, and misplaced, and there are a number of wormholes in the sides of the box.
