MOMOYAMA p. Japanese YOROI ARMOR, ASHIGARU
A simple light weight Ashigaru Do or foot soldiers armor of heavily lacquered hemp dating from the Momoyama period (16th century) complete with kote, suneate and jingasa. There are no markings of allegiance on either the Do or the Jingasa, perhaps a prudent move for a farmer/warrior in the ever changing political landscape of the warring states era, when powerful families that had ruled Japan for centuries could be toppled in a single battle, and Spies, assassination, patricide and all manner of devious maneuvers were the common place and could turn the tide in a moment. From the Do hang six rows of four gessan, or thigh protectors, each attached by row upon row of blue chord. The do does show some age, in a large bare spot behind the right shoulder, and in chipping along the shoulder area. Also, there are a number of large cracks in the rigid lacquer due to the flexible nature of the two large plates. However, considering the four hundred plus years of history, it is not in bad condition. The jingasa is also hemp or some other lightweight material covered in black lacquer. It is just less than 14 inches in diameter. The kote and suneate are very simple with splints joined by chain mail over unadorned rough cloth. The right arm has two large holes where it would appear mice have chewed on the cloth, and the piping on the edge of one shin guard has come loose, otherwise they are in very good condition. Judging from color and texture, it would seem both the chain mail items and Jingasa have been re-blackened at some point, however the Do seems to be original. A very presentable foot soldiers armor, it would make a fine addition to a collection of Samurai paraphernalia. The box and stand are for display purposes only, and are not included in this sale.
