BRILLIANT OLD SHOKI / DEMON SCROLL, TANRAKU
An outstanding water color and ink image of Shoki on silk depicting the demon queller as he crushes a devil under his boot, sword in hand, signed Tanraku and enclosed in an older wooden box. The hard, concise black lines and unusual use of shading show a mixture of traditional and modern styles. Tanraku, whose real name is Hayashi Kintaro, was born in Kyoto in 1875 (where he would have been influenced by the then modern realism of the Shijo school), and apprenticed under Kano Tanbi before moving to Tokyo where he established himself as a prominent early 20th century artists. The scroll is bordered in copper brocade extended above and below in raw silk and features large bone rollers. The detail is spectacular, with a distinct Ukiyo-e flair to the musculature reminiscent of paintings by Hokusai. The beard and Shock of black hair creating a mane about his head is done in a thin, wispy manner that gives a dreamlike feeling and truly sets off the vicious look on his face. The painting does show very light foxing, with the age spotting more prominent in the upper silk field. There is also a heavy crease where the lower edge of the copper brocade meets the lower silk field. It measures 21-1/4 by 78 inches (54 x 199 cm).
