Japanese Sho-Do ZEN CALIGRAPHY, NANTENBO
An early 20th century calligraphy work by Nakahara Nantenbo (Toju Zenchu, 1839-1925) framed in hardwood and mounted on gold flake reading Ko-taku-bo, meaning the Chamber of Light. Of course, Nantenbo was likely the most infamous Zen-shu priest of the 20th century; a man born a samurai, who relinquished the world to join the clergy after his mothers death, and subsequently was a driving force behind the restoration of faith and integrity in the decrepit political system that was Zen Buddhism at the close of the Edo period. The frame measures15-1/2 inches by 4 feet (395 x 122 cm), while the painting itself measures 34-1/4 by 10 (87 x 26 cm). There is some age staining on the paper and a few air pockets visible in the frame corners (usually a result of drying of the inner wooden frame causing slight shrinkage. In addition there is an indentation in the gold-flecked paper below the first character on the right.
