EXTREMELY FINE CHING Dynasty CHAWAN TEA BOWL
Truly it must be held to understand, this is a stunning Karamono ceramic Tenmoku Chawan acquired from a private collection in Japan, the thin body covered in mirror smooth deep molasses colored glaze. It comes wrapped in a Meiji period silk bag, enclosed in an ancient wooden box. Although Ming is the most well known period for Chinese porcelain, Stoneware did not reach a Zenith until the Ching Dynasty. The extremely thin walls taper down to a slightly thicker base in a delicate, almost imperceptible concave arch. The kodai is less than 1-1/2 inches (3.5cm) in diameter, 1/4 of an inch (8 mm) deep and is cut with a perfect spiral. There is one long scratch inside the bowl, and minor wear consistent with age. It measures 4-5/8 inches (11.8 cm) diameter, 2 inches (5 cm) tall.
