Bucolic scenery wraps around these footed Haisen bowls by Takahashi Dohachi enclosed in the original wooden box signed Kachutei Dohachi followed by the distinctive shell shaped seal of the family. Each is 6-1/4 inches (16 cm) diameter, 4 inches (10 cm) tall and in excellent condition. An annotation inside the box is dated the first year of Taisho (the era began in July 1912).
It is difficult to date the works of Dohachi, however I would guess this to be that of the 6th generation, (Hidemitsu, 1881-1941), who was in fact, son of the fourth generation. Dohachi IV died while Hidemitsu was still in his teens, and the family was headed temporarily by Ogawa Yukinosuke (Dohachi V) until Hidemitsu was old enough to take over the kiln himself. He was best remembered for blue & white Sometsuke and Sencha tea wares.
