A wispy elongated vision of the holy deer, vehicle of Kasuga Daimyojin (The combined god of Kasuga Shrine) clutdhing a branch of peaches in its mouth. It is said the god Takemikazuchi rode on the back of a white deer to the top of Mount Mikasa to establish a shrine to protect Nara (the origins of Kasuga Shrine). Made of yellow bronze, it dates from the later 19th to early 20th century. It is 13-1/2 inches (34 cm) tall and in excellent condition. The back saddle opens to reveal the incense chamber. The horns are removable for safe storage.
