Antique Japanese Sculpted Ceramic Skull by Ranzan
Please refer to our stock # TCR6997 when inquiring.
Talk about creepy! A Lifesize modeled-ceramic human skull dated on the base Autumn of Showa 7 (1932) adjacent an impressed seal reading Ranzan. It is hyper realistic, entirely in raw clay but for two white teeth. In typical Japanese fashion, even the underside, invisible when set down, is entirely detailed. It looks as if there were originally two more teeth in front, which have been broken off at the root. Very rare, a famous version of this same theme was made by Suwa Sozan I in the late Meiji period. The skull is a recurring theme in Japanese art, generally with Buddhist connotations. It is used to demonstrate the transient nature of our lives.
