A deer image representing the Shinto god of Kasuga Shrine carrying a silver mirror representing the full moon rising over its back dating from the Eiroku period (Momoyama era, 1557-1570) enclosed in a wooden box. The image is roughly 18 x 8 x 22 cm (7 x 3 x 9 inches). There are some cracks in the shrine gate atop his back and some old repairs. The Mirror is engraved with the date Eiroku 10… (it is broken off below the character 10, placing it between 1567 and 1570) and the character Nobu (a common character in names). The deer image itself is later, likely 19th century, and was made to enshrine the ancient relic.
