A five-tiered box of age darkened kiri-wood filled with lacquered katana-saya sword scabbard samples for an itinerant merchant to show prospective samurai coming of age or looking to upgrade. Each tier contains ten unique samples of various techniques, variations in color, inlay, texture and style. Most are austere to suit the taste of the times, yet some are more flamboyant, for the upper echelons or playboy samurai looking to impress the girls down in the Yoshiwara with his luxurious taste. Each sample is roughly 12.5 cm (5 inches) long. The box is 34 x 14 x 10 cm (13-1/2 x 5-1/2 x 4 inches) when stacked and is bound by a woven chord. Very Rare!
