Please refer to our stock # F012 when inquiring.
The lonesome creature stares up at the full moon riding high in the autumn sky, a fabulous image by important artist Yoshimura Horyu enclosed in the original signed double wood box titled Tsuki-shita Tanuki Zu. From the kiri-box to the silk mounting to the rollers, everything about this scroll is top quality. Ink and pigment on silk in a silk border patterned with bent autumn grass mimicking that in the painting, as if an extension of hte artist brush, and featuring solid ivory rollers (these will be changed if exported). The scroll is 22 x 86 inches (56 x 218 cm) and in excellent condition. Minor toning typical of age.
Yoshimura Horyu (1874-1936) was born in Osaka and studied under Mori Niho (1818-1891), excelling at depictions of animals in the Shijo style of painting.
