A very rare voluminous Tsubo of unusual design covered in green glaze splashed with pink about the rim from the Toyoraku kilns outside Nagoya. A black lacquered wooden lid covers the opening. It is stamped on the base, and comes enclosed in a sturdy wooden box. The shape is unique, and it was likely used for dry goods storage. It is 11-1/2 inches (29.5 cm) tall, 10-1/2 inches (26.5 cm) diameter with no cracks or chips. There are a few scratches in the green glaze, consistent with use. Meiji period, late 19th to early 20th century.
