A beautifully designed double-walled basket lined with black lacquered paper for carrying sumi (charcoal) in the Japanese Tea Ceremony. The handle is made in a unique manner of 8 individual strands of shaved-bamboo bound together at top and splitting off in all directions where it is tied into the body of the basket. It is 10 inches (25 cm) square and in excellent condition.
Sumitori baskets are one of the oldest forms of basketry in Japan, and one of the first to be designed not strictly for utilitarian purposes, but as an art form.
