Rare Gosho Ningyo Painted Scroll by Mitsui Bunji

Unusual combination of Western and traditional Japanese techniques by Mitsui Bunji, Pigment on silk in a kinran silk border with large ivory rollers enclosed in the original signed double wood box. It is 66.5 x 215 cm (26 x 85 inches) and is in overall excellent condition.
Mitsui Bunji (1893-1958) moved to Kyoto in 1909 to study painting at the Kansai Bijutsuin. In 1917 he moved to Tokyo Where he studied at the private school of Nihonga artists Kawabata Gyokusho (Kawabata Ga-Gakko). The following year he was first exhibited oil paintings at the Nikkakai, receiving the Nikka-award there the following year. However from 1935 he switched to almost exclusively Nihonga.
