Geese fly over the snow covered hills surrounding an icy mountain lake in this striking scene by Yanagisawa Shinichi enclosed in the original signed wooden box. In the fore tall cedars tinged orange stand unperturbed by the glacial weather, as if bathed in sunlight. Pigment on silk, the scene is bordered in pale green patterned silk with substantial and unusual carved wooden rollers. Judging by the size of the painting and style of mounting it was likely made for exhibition, and is in fact a strikingly similar composition to his 1931 submission to the 12th Teiten National Exhbition. The scroll is 40 x 87 inches (101 x 221 cm) and is in overall fine condition. There is some minor loss to the thick gofun (powdered shell) of the snow on the peak of the near hill, this can be restored if desired.
Yanagisawa Shinichi was born in 1895 in Nagano, and this surrounding figured predominantly in his paintings. He graduated the Tokyo University of Art and fell under the circle of Matsuoka Eikyu. His works were often exhibited with the Teiten National Exhibition in the pre-war years.
