| An impressive Later Edo period (18th-19th century) multi-level gilded Buddhist Butsudai altar containing two individual carved 3 dimensional landscapes each with tiny carved human figures. On the base is a secondary base supporting two richly carved columns enclosing a fully carved scene of pilgrims meeting in the outdoors, a large pine, peony flower and lava like rocks forming the background, all in 3-D (scene 11 by 6-1/2 inches or 30 x 16 cm). Long curving legs rise up from the intricately shaped base to create a secondary level separated from the bottom level by a wide sloping diaper of carved and cutout filigree. Upon this sits a second scene of more top-knotted pilgrims meeting, again two pine trees, and a well-like structure, as well as the lava rock form the background (scene 12-1/2 by 7 inches or 32 x 18 cm). The human figures all have natural wood skin tones with colored robes. The background objects are all gilded gold, however, some of the gold has come off over the last two centuries. Again, supported by intricately carved columns is a wide, multi-tiered top covered in black lacquer upon which would have been placed an image of the Buddha. There is one split in the top which runs full length, however it is not loose. Some of the gold has been rubbed off over time, and there are typical chips and grime associated with age, however all in all it is in very good condition. It measures 19-1/2 by 11 by 9-1/4 inches tall, (49 x 27.5 x 23.5 cm). | |||||||||||||||
