Saintly figures from the Daoist Immortals populate the literati paradise depicted in lacquer and mother of pearl inlay on this incense tray dating from the 18th-19th centuries. It is 9 x 13 inches (23 x 35 cm) and cones in an old cloth pouch enclosed in a custom made period kiri-wood box. The bottom, performed in hakeme (brush-stroke) black-lacquer, may have been restored at some time in the distant past.
