A beautifully crafted black lacquerd storage box in the shape of an armor box with six legs bound with brass. It is dated on bottom with what appears to be the 5th month of Meiji 11 (1878) and the name Nakahara Tsunesuke. The lock has been disarmed so that it may be opened without a key. The lid is 54.5 x 32.5 cm (21-1/2 x 13 inches), stands 38 cm (15 inches) tall and weighs 7.8 killograms (17 pounds) The lacquered joints of one back leg have separated from the body of the box (see close-up photo). Otherwise it is in surprisingly good condition.
