A voluminous wa-gumi basket of open weave bamboo by Yamamoto Chikuryusai enclosed in the original signed wooden basket dated 1921. It is signed on the base and stands 38 cm (15 inches) tall and is in excellent condition.
Yamamoto Chikuryusai (1868-1945) was born in Osaka and learned the art of basketry under the tutelage of Chikuunsai I. Works are held in the Asian Art Meuseum of San Francisco among others. Anotuher basket by him after the Chinese style was exhibited at the New York Metropolitan as part of their show of Japanese Bamboo Art over the summer of 2017.
