A very unusual bento box in the shape of a chagama kettle for boiling water in the Japanese Tea Ceremony. The body is covered in textured matt lacquer resembling the blackened raw iron of the kettle, with ro-iro black on the bottom and vermilion within. It breaks down into five separate pieces, each serving as a dish or bowl. Assembled it is 25 cm (10 inches) diameter and in excellent condition, dating from the Meiji period, and comes in a wooden box.
