Antique Japanese Bijin Scroll, Yoshimura Hoka
A beauty stops to open the reed blinds, perhaps lured by the call of a twilight cricket; a fine scroll by Yoshimura Hoka enclosed in the original signed wooden box. Performed with pigment on silk, in patterned brocade border with ivory rollers. The scroll measures 26-1/2 x 86 inches (67 x 219 cm). There is light scattered foxing, concentrated mostly in the upper border.
Yoshimura Hoka (b. 1906) was a pioneering Osaka female artist. Biographical information is scarce on female artists of the era however we know she trained under Yoshimura Horyu, placing her in the Mori-school of painting, and was known for delicate and detailed Bijin-ga paintings.
