Large Edo p. Scroll by Kyuro (Ki no Baitei) B
Scholars, sages and hermits enjoy the simple pleasures of life lost among the clear waters and deep foliage of the willow forest in this spectacular literati paradise by Ki (no) Baitei (Kyuro, 1734-1810). One of the most interesting and important scrolls in our collection, and also one of the most difficult to photograph. Ink and light color on paper in the original Edo p. Border and enclosed in an antique wood box. Minor marks, abrasions and wrinkles, we have had no restoration performed on this piece. The scroll measures 26 x 77-1/2 inches (66 x 197cm). Feel free to ask for more photos. Ki no Baitei was a Nanga-Bunjinga painter and poet. Born in Kyoto, he was a direct student of Yosa Buson. After moving to Otsu in 1789 (following the virtual leveling of Kyoto by disaster the year before), he came to be called the Buson of Omi. In the collection of the Ashmolean and British Museums among others.
