RARE! ANTIQUE Japanese MEIJI p. HAKUJI TANUKI
A highly unusual large Hakuji ceramic figure of a Tanuki (raccoon like creature attributed with supernatural powers) dressed in a womanfs kimono, bushy tail poking up from the back. Long claws can be seen on the creaturesf paws protruding from the voluminous robes. Both Tanuki and Fox are believed to be capable of changing themselves into beautiful women to lure unsuspecting men to their doom. This appears to have been a lamp base, as there is a circular slot just behind the head for receiving the column. There is a firing flaw visible as a dark split up the front of the robes, as well as one at the right haunch. There is one slight chip to the back of the left ear; otherwise it is as it came out of the kiln over a century ago. The figure stands 8-1/4 inches (21cm) tall, 8-1/2 inches wide by 10 inches long (21 by 25 cm).
