VERY RARE SIGNED Japanese KYOGEN KITSUNE MASK
An absolutely stunning Taisho period Kyogen mask of a fox, cut from a single piece of kiri wood and covered in gofun, lacquer and paint and featuring horsehair fringe. Golden eyes glare out above the snarling mouth filled with very lifelike teeth set in blood red gums. The mask features an unusually long snout, very difficult to carve from kiri and a testament to the skill of the artisan. Carved deeply into the back of the mask is the craftsmans seal. The inside of the men measures 8-3/4 inches (22 cm) tall, and to the tip of the nose is 6-1/2 inches (16.5 cm) long. The horsehair is frayed and loose in the holes, balding in some areas, and there is some spotting typical of accumulated dust on the surface of the forehead, ears and top of nose. The mask comes in an antique case with three windows.
