MEIJI p. Japanese WOOD KYOGEN MASK, SIGNED
A wild Kyogen mask depicting the god of the mountains carved from a single piece of kiri wood, covered in lacquer and signed Kiyo saku. The knit brow shadows bulging, red-rimmed eyes coated in an oxidized silver/brass alloy. Below, a bushy mustache of thick bristles juts out from below flaring nostrils, gold teeth giving off an evil glint in his down turned mouth. The mask has some bubbling to the lacquer covering over the right temple, and there are several chips, especially about the right eye (see pictures). It measures 9 by 7-1/4 inches (22.5 cm by 17.5 cm), and dates from the Meiji period.
