Leaping Samurai by Iwasa Koko
Leaping over the battlements, arrows dashing into the wooden planks about him the samurai thrusts into the enemy. A fine pigment on silk painting with powdered gold rubbed into the highlights, bordered in patterned brocade extended with beige and featuring solid ivory rollers by Iwasa Koko (1884-1951). The scroll is 15 x 77 inches (38 x 195 cm) and in fine condition but for some faint scattered spotting.
Koko was born in Nagoya, and studied painting in Kyoto, the cultural heart of Japan, under the tutelage of both Taniguchi Kokyo and Takeuchi Seiho. Paintings by him were displayed at the Teiten and Bunten National Exhibitions.
