EDO p. Japanese Mt FUJI SCROLL, GANKU, IVORY
A superb Edo period Haiga style scroll by Kishi Ganku (1749-1838) of Echizen (modern Kanazawa prefecture) featuring Mt. Fuji jutting up through the mist, a row of trees tumbling down to the water in the foreground; the scene is signed Echizen Ke Ganku. Above the picture is a poem which translates: In a stand of pines at Miho (place name), The vibrant green reflecting the sun causes the scenery to fade, The snowy summit of Fuji, Floats brilliantly in the haze. Signed Chu-Na-Gon Mochitoyo. The ink on paper rendition is bordered in tea brown linen woven with blue and green flowers, extended above and below in hand woven caramel, and ends with solid ivory rollers. There is a light spot above the trees and to the left of the signature like a stain has been cleaned. It measures 19-1/8 inches by 6 feet (48.5 by 183 cm) and comes enclosed in a fine old kiri-wood box.
