Hototogisu and Moon, Japanese Scroll by Imao Keisho
A shadow before the moon, the call echoes in the dark, the cuckoo: a fine painting in the truest Nihonga tradition by Imao Keisho (1903-1993) enclosed in the original signed wooden box. Ink on paper with fine brocade border, the scroll measures 39 x 113 cm (15-1/2 x 44-1/2 inches).
Imao Keisho was born in Kyoto in May of 1903 the son of Imao Keinen (1845 - 1924), one of the most influential painters of the early 20th century. He graduated the Kyoto School of Fine Art, and then apprenticed under his father in the Maruyama style. Not given to the National Exhibtions, he led a more reclusive life, however his work decorates many temples in Kyoto, including both the Gold and silver pavilions, Nanzenji, Kurodani and Honen-in. Several pieces have also been collected by the Imperial Household Agency.
