An Enso Zen ink work depicting a circle containing a four character phrase by Kutsu Deiryu enclosed in a wooden box. The scroll measures 17 x 44 Inches (44 x 111 cm) and is in fine condition. Likely mounted later, some damage to the paper was repaired upon mounting. Kutsu Deiryu, 1895-1954. A sparse figurative landscape by multi talented Meiji literati potter Mashimizu Zoroku (1822-1877) dated 1876 enclosed in the original signed wooden box. A broom and scroll representing Kanzan and Jitoku, a monk and a kitchen hand whose friendship transcended rank and became a key element in Buddhist lore.
