A large gourd in the shape of a stone bound by silk chord and enclosed in a period custom made wooden box; the shape reminiscent of the stone used to block a garden path in the tea ceremony. A dark wooden bung shaped like clouds of smoke ries from the top, cinched tightly by the silk chord. A set of three uncarved solid lacquer stamps dating from the early 20th century enclosed in a period wooden box from the estate of a Kyoto family involved in literati and art movements from the later Edo period on. The stamps are cur from solid blocks of layered lacquer, ground and polished. They are roughly 2-1/2 inches (6 cm) long) and in new condition. The box is roughly 5 x 2-1/2 x 3 inches (12 x 6 x 8 cm). To have a set like this made today would be in the thousands of dollars.

A brass tea scoop dating from the later Edo period etched on the outer surface with flowers, and originaly lined with applied gold. The gold has largely worn away, leaving a shadow of color on the edges and center. Gold was originally used on tea utensils as it was believed that if it came in contact with poison the gold would change color, thus saving the participants from danger. Four grinning tigers support the flat body of this porcelain stand covered in white with lapping blue chevrons circling the sides. The tigers stand in the style of the Manjirushi, symbol of eternity. I have never seen another piece like it. The stand is roughly 8-1/2 inches (21.5 cm) square, 4 inches (10 cm) tall, dating from the 19th century.
