The Kura - Japanese Art Treasures
As many may know we at The Kura have been heavily involved in the relief effort in Tohoku following the 2011, March 11 Earthquake and Tsunami which killed at least 26,000 people, and left hundreds of thousands homeless. During this last year we have neglected the website, and inconvenienced many with delays in service. Please know it was not without good reason, and your patience and understanding through this difficult time for Japan has been very much appreciated. For more on our efforts please see http://www.idrojapan.org
After this first year anniversary we are now looking forward to getting back to the business of collection building, and look forward to working with you again in 2012. Sincerely: Robert Mangold Owner, The Kura - Director, International Disaster Relief Organization Japan
Robert Mangold has been working with Japanese antiques since 1995 with an emphasis on ceramics, Paintings, Armour and Buddhist furniture.

Scholars stand among the bamboo on the color infused sides of this large hand painted 19th century jar made to contain dry goods. The vessel is 14 inches (35 cm) tall, 11 inches (28 cm) diameter with no chips or cracks. A beautifully executed bit of Mingei.

A spectacular Naeshirogawa Mimitsuku Tsubo dating from the Edo period, the rich red clay covered in thick splatters of dark glaze. This is one of the pots we picked up in a recent trip through the kiln sites of Kyushu, Japans Southernmost Main Island. The tsubo has been built up with coils of clay, and smoothed with a slightly textured paddle. The olive glaze has then been applied over a resistant surface preparation, causing it to peel back creating the unusual affect...

This is a shell shaped serving dish from the Usunokochi-yaki Kilns of Southern Kyushu dating from the Edo period used as a serving dish on pleasure boats which plied the seas and rivers of Kagoshima, the ancient seat of government for the Satsuma fief. The theme of shellfish likely reflects what it held, with a large tray for fish, and smaller trays for side dishes, pickles or soy sauce. The barnacle in center would have held the chopsticks upright...

A smattering of goma ash surrounds but is almost worn from the top of this ancient Bizen footed bowl which had been used as a Kensui spent water jar for the Japanese Tea ceremony. A pale gray is visible below the surface, as if looking through the outer red. The bowl is heavily worn outside from much handling, and was likely used on a daily basis. Likely Momoyama period, I have not seen another like it. Judging by the shape it is possibly a priests begging bowl, although unusual with a foot...

A haunting crackled glaze of pale yellow and cream with clouds of gray covers the faceted sides of this exquisite antique Mentori Chawan of light soft clay. Inside it is filled with color from years of use. The bowl glows in the dim candle light of the tea room, like the spirit of some past tea master kneeling beside the kama. A stamp beneath appears to read Mukashi (Long Past), but is partly obscured by glaze which makes it difficult to be sure...

A large and unusual Raku hand warmer (Shuro) in the shape of a monkey Charm (sarubobo) by representative Kyoto artist Kiyomizu Rokube IV (Rokuko, 1847-1920) dating circa 1920 enclosed in the original signed wooden box. The Sarubobo is a Mingei Monkey Charm from the Gifu area, here recreated in the low-fired Raku pottery tradition of Kyoto and seated on the original silk pillow. The walls of this unusual piece of Raku ware are more than 1/2 inch (1.5 cm) thick, making it quite sturdy...

A spectacular Meiji period Tenmoku Chawan by Eiraku Zengoro decorated in a flamboyant style with precious metals. A golden pine trunk rises, almost entirely obscured by the mass of silver pine needles built up both within and without the bowl. It is most powerful in comparison to the ordinarily subdued Kyo-yaki ware of the Meiji era. The stamp on the base is undoubtedly that of Wazen. The bowl is just less than 5 inches (12.5 cm) diameter and in perfect condition...
