The Kura - Japanese Art Treasures
As many may know we at The Kura have been heavily involved in the relief effort in Tohoku following the 2011, March 11 Earthquake and Tsunami which killed at least 26,000 people, and left hundreds of thousands homeless. During this last year we have neglected the website, and inconvenienced many with delays in service. Please know it was not without good reason, and your patience and understanding through this difficult time for Japan has been very much appreciated. A very unusual tiny tea set for serving precious drops of Sencha tea dating from the 19th century kilns of Kyoto. The Tea pot is signed on the side (illegible) and overall all are in fine condition. The cups are 3.5 cm tall, 4.3 cm diameter. The Tea Pot 4.2 cm tall, 4.5 cm diameter. Each cup is signed on the base Miyabi.
The size of this set is very unusual for Japan, and reflects the 19th century ideals when continental or Chinese items and materials were highly respected...

A pair of stylish late 19th to early 20th century Tokkuri sake flasks covered in a bold design of red and white facets bordered with gold. Unmarked, they are likely from Kyoto, where they were found. Each is 7 inches (18 cm) tall, 3-1/2 inches (9 cm) diameter and in fine condition.

A set of Nesting Shino Sake Cups with Dice. They are stamped on the base, and come in three sizes, the accompanying dice imprinted with the various sizes on each side, so a roll of the dice decides your fate in the drinking game. Very unusual and in excellent condition, they are (stacked) 2 x 2 x 1-1/4 inches (5 x 5 x 3 cm).

Enlightenment through contemplation of a Stone; a powerful work by literati genius Tomioka Tessai, dating circa 1880 when the artist was in his 40s, enclosed in the original Signed wooden box. It is performed with ink and light color on paper bordered in fine silk. It measures 63 x 213 cm (25 x 84 inches) and is in fine condition. The stamps are visible in the monumental book Tessai, as well as on a painting from a similar era page 39 of the book Tomioka Tessai Ten (1986)...

An egret stands alone and tranquil among the fresh green rush, resting lightly on one leg, a fine painting dating from the Taisho era signed Toko-me (By the female artist Toko). Performed with pigment on silk, it is in overall fine condition, with only minor toning/marks to the silk typical of age and is bordered in green silk with a black lacquer frame typical of the era. It retains the original backing paper and comes enclosed in the original wooden storage box (if desired)...

A Bairin Yaki Suiteki water dropper in the shape of a chestnut covered in that quintessential Bairin aubergine glaze with a soft textured orange leaf over the water bowl covering the port. It is 3-1/2 x 2-1/4 x 2 inches (9 x 6 x 5 cm) and is in fine condition.

An elegant rendition of the famous Rimpa Crane standing alongside a swirling river of silver created by Shoun for the Shobido Art Studio enclosed in the original wooden box. Extremely well crafted, the creature stands 11 inches (25 cm) tall and is signed Shoun Saku. The black lacquered table is 18 x 13 inches (45 x 33 cm) and is in fine condition.

A beautiful antique Kiyomizu-yaki sake cup decorated with 6 butterflies among summer grasses stamped Rokubei and enclosed in a period wooden box titled Rokkasen (the six poets). The box is dated Koka 5 (1848). The cup measures 6.5 cm (2-1/2 inches) diameter, 3.7 cm (1-1/2 inches) tall and is in fine condition.
The Rokubei lineage began in the mid Edo period with Kiyomizu Rokubei I (1738-1799) and continues to this day with the 8th generation...
