The Kura - Japanese Art Treasures
As many may know we at The Kura have been heavily involved in the relief effort in Tohoku following the 2011, March 11 Earthquake and Tsunami which killed at least 26,000 people, and left hundreds of thousands homeless. During this last year we have neglected the website, and inconvenienced many with delays in service. Please know it was not without good reason, and your patience and understanding through this difficult time for Japan has been very much appreciated. For more on our efforts please see http://www.idrojapan.org
After this first year anniversary we are now looking forward to getting back to the business of collection building, and look forward to working with you again in 2012. Sincerely: Robert Mangold Owner, The Kura - Director, International Disaster Relief Organization Japan
Robert Mangold has been working with Japanese antiques since 1995 with an emphasis on ceramics, Paintings, Armour and Buddhist furniture.

A smattering of goma ash surrounds but is almost worn from the top of this ancient Bizen footed bowl which had been used as a Kensui spent water jar for the Japanese Tea ceremony. A pale gray is visible below the surface, as if looking through the outer red. The bowl is heavily worn outside from much handling, and was likely used on a daily basis. Likely Momoyama period, I have not seen another like it. Judging by the shape it is possibly a priests begging bowl, although unusual with a foot...

A haunting crackled glaze of pale yellow and cream with clouds of gray covers the faceted sides of this exquisite antique Mentori Chawan of light soft clay. Inside it is filled with color from years of use. The bowl glows in the dim candle light of the tea room, like the spirit of some past tea master kneeling beside the kama. A stamp beneath appears to read Mukashi (Long Past), but is partly obscured by glaze which makes it difficult to be sure...

Sumptuous red interspersed with gold geometric lattice to which cling purple and green chrysanthemum, a fine priest robe dating from the late 19th century. The Kesa is backed with unusual pink silk. It is 81 x 35-1/2 inches (155 x 90 cm), and would be a fabulous wall hanging in overall good condition...

The moon rises slowly into the evening sky, draped in the robes of an ancient pine, a fine early 20th century screen by Tatewaki Taizan, performed with ink on silk with a dash of pale gofun. It has been fully Remounted with a simple black lacquered frame accentuating the stately manner of the subject, with sturdy blue cloth backing. At that time some splits in the silk were repaired. Each panel measures 6 feet by 34 inches (182.5 x 86.5 cm)...

Autumn grasses, vines and a spray of flora decorate this anonymous mid Edo period (18th-19th century) Rimpa Floral Screen. After two centuries the white gofun has worn, leaving only a ghostly trace which accentuates the screens age and beauty. It is performed with light color and pigment on paper with applied gold flake and has been completely remounted, bordered in colorful Edo period cloth in a black lacquered frame. Each panel is 34-1/2 x 61-1/2 inches (88 x 156 cm).

An ancient and worn iron bound wooden Tsurube well bucket turned into a vase and engraved with the calligraphy of Tomioka Tessai (1837-1924) enclosed in a period stamped wooden box. Originally a wooden bar would have run through the upper center for the rope to tie to, the hole where it was is now plugged with old wood, and a copper liner inserted with a triad of chains joined in the center from which it could be hung...

A tiny mingei image of the god of fortune Hotei carved from what appears to my untrained eye to be bone, possibly Stag-horn. He squats, grinning up at the sky, his ubiquitous sack voluminous behind. Through the back and down through the bottom is bored a hole for the string. The figure is 1-1/2 inches (4 cm) tall and likely dates from the 19th century (Late Edo to Meiji). These are not modern reproductions, but genuine antique Japanese Netsuke coming from Kyoto.
Hotei (Ch...
